Danilevsky : A Russian Totalitarian Philosopher
Robert E. MacMaster
Nicholas Yakovlevich Danilevsky (1822–1885), a biologist and statistician for the Russian government, a Utopian socialist and colleague of Dostoevsky in the Fourierist Petrashevsky circle, is primarily known for his Panslavist work, Russia and Europe. Reassessing that famous book in this intellectual biography, Robert MacMaster takes issue with previous interpretations of Danilevsky’s thought and its historical significance, and in the process casts light on the development of the modern Russian radical mind. The author sees Danilevsky as a totalitarian philosopher and self-styled political prophet whose theories bear striking typological similarities to Bolshevism.
